David Cargo Library earns State Library recognition

6/14/2017

The David Cargo Library at the El Valle Community Center has received recognition as a developing library within the New Mexico system of libraries.  Recognition from the State Library indicates that the library has met the initial standards and requirements for public libraries in New Mexico and can achieve full public library status during the next three years.
This success is the result of efforts by the many library volunteers and the EVCC board, especially library director Rebecca Salazar, and reflects their shared commitment to making full information, literacy, and research resources available to the El Valle community. The recognition of the Villanueva David Cargo Library also realizes the hopes of both the founder, David Cargo, and early advocates for the library, including long-time resident Deborah Seavey.
The new status will give the Villanueva library access to state library funds, including state GO bonds and the LSTA awards distributed through the State Library.
The library is currently completing its foundational documents, and both cataloguing and remodeling projects are underway.
