Program Information

What? Summer Reading is a program that keeps children reading during the summer when they are out of school to avoid the summer “reading gap”. The program inspires reading through a thematic focus that pairs hands-on,  structured activities with books for different reading levels. This year, the national Summer Reading theme is “All Together.” We will be looking at the ways animals, humans, and even plants all work together to create and sustain a community and an ecosystem.

Who? For children ages 7-11. To enroll, a child must have completed First Grade and not yet started Middle School. Children will be divided into reading and activity groups based on age.

When? Friday mornings from 9-12, June 9th – July 28th

Where? El Valle Community Center Villanueva Library.

How do I register my child? Complete an application and return it to the Villanueva Library. We will contact you to confirm enrollment.

Is space limited? YES!  We only have room for a total of 20 students.

How does the “reading” part of the program work? Each week, your child will bring home 1 or 2 library books plus a Reading Log. Children are expected to read 20 minutes each day during the week. You can help your child meet these goals by creating a dedicated “family reading time” when everyone reads for together. For children who are not yet reading, parents, older siblings, caregivers and friends should make time to read aloud for 20 minutes each day.

What about meals? We will offer both breakfast and lunch to all students. Meals will be provided through Valley Elementary by West Las Vegas School District Food Services. Please come 20 minutes before start time so your child has time to finish eating breakfast before programming starts. Lunch will be served before program end time.

What should my child bring? Each child should bring a backpack or cloth bag with the following a water bottle, a light jacket or sweater, a sun hat, and sun block.

What if someone gets hurt? We will have a staff member trained in first aid and CPR on site at all times.
